Be aware that different traffic rules and regulations apply. Since 2019, Austria has raised the speed limit from 130k/m to 140k/m on several motorways. Moreover, it is important to keep in mind that during the winter, between November 1st and April 15th, vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes must be suitably equipped for its extreme winter conditions. This means that winter tyres must be fitted. Furthermore, drivers must also carry snow chains with them as these may be required on some of the Austrian roads. In case snow chains are required, you will come across a blue traffic sign on which a snow chain is fitted to a driving wheel. This sign indicates the use of snow chains. Within tunnels it is not allowed to make use of snow chains.
A vignette represents a form of road pricing imposed on vehicles and indicates that road tax has been paid. Since December 2017, it has become possible to purchase a digital vignette for Austria. This means that it is no longer necessary to affix a toll sticker to your windscreen. A digital vignette is linked to your number plate which indicates that your number plate has been registered by the Austrian authorities. This is an advantage as you don't need to buy a vignette at one of the toll lanes in Austria and during inspections it can be quickly assessed whether you have purchased a digital vignette.
Unfortunately, there are certain sections in Austria in which roads require more excessive maintenance. Hence, an additional road tax is applicable to these roads. This is often referred to as “section toll” or “route rates” for which an additional fee has to be paid at one of the local toll booths.
If you travel through Austria without having a valid vignette, you might run the risk of getting fined. Such a fine has to be paid within a limited number of days. Unpaid fines can induce further penalties variating between €300 and €3000 and the vehicle might even be confiscated in order to force you to pay the fine (and additional penalty). By means of camera assistance, the local Austrian authorities are able to keep track of drivers and check whether a valid vignette has been purchased.
While driving through Austria you need to be in possession of one high visibility warning vest per person, a first-aid kit and a warning triangle.
Motorcyclists also need to be in possession of a warning triangle and first-aid kit. There is no need to be in possession of safety vest, even though this is highly recommendable.
By processing your order, your number plate will be registered in the Austrian database. You won't receive a physical toll sticker, but a digital order confirmation of your vignette. This order confirmation and invoice can be downloaded via the link you will receive from us via email.
No, there is no need to order a separate vignette for pulling a trailer if your vehicle weights up to 3.5 tonnes. Just make sure that you specify the number plate of your vehicle (not your trailer, in case you have different number plates).
